About Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic Therapy is rehabilitation done in a therapeutic pool. As our pools are kept at 94 – 98 degrees depending on your needs, you will be able to increase your range of motion in a way that may not be possible on land after an injury. Additionally, the water gives a gentle resistance to help build strength. It’s important to keep in mind that there is no risk of falling, which makes Aquatic Therapy a safe form of exercise for people with balance issues. Aquatic Therapy allows for conditioning for specific injuries through dynamic stabilization and builds a foundation of strength and function without compromising back or joint dysfunction. As Dr. Mark McCoy, DPT, explains, “Aquatic Therapy takes away half of the patient’s body weight and gives patients mobility with little or no pain, which in some cases can be impossible on land.”
Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
There are several benefits to Aquatic Therapy, including experiencing an increased range of motion in the water, increased ability to move, and building strength and balance. For people living with chronic pain, exercising in the water is a less painful way to work out. As previously mentioned, patients who are concerned about falling may find aquatic therapy to be a safe choice when it comes to exercising. The water can also reduce the pressure on aching joints. As the water makes you more buoyant, it is a great option for early movement after surgery, especially for those who are partial or non-weight bearing.
Aquatic Therapy Program at Performance Physical Therapy
Folsom Clinic
Our heated therapeutic pool in Folsom is one of the largest in Folsom at 30 X 30 feet, with a depth of 3.5 – 4.5 feet which allows for a wide variety of exercises. Additionally, this allows for each patient to have plenty of space during their exercises due to the spacious size.
Our pool is easy to enter and exit with steps, stairs, and a water-powered lift. The pool remains within the 94 – 98 degree range to allow for conditioning of specific injuries. In addition to the pool, Folsom also has a 16 X 6 feet spa, perfect for relaxing in after a session of aquatic therapy.
Our physical therapists in Folsom include Dr. Mark McCoy, DPT, and Dr. Mallory McGowan, DPT, Folsom Clinic Director.

How the Water Heals
Aquatic therapy is a popular method of treatment and works well for several reasons.
The buoyancy of the water helps reduce the amount of weight beared by the patient, which reduces the stress put on joints. Water itself is a great source of resistance that helps strengthen muscles. Additionally, you may benefit from the hydrostatic pressure as it helps decrease joint and soft tissue swelling. Since the water is warm, your muscles will be able to relax, allowing for blood to flow easier to injured areas.
