In October, several physical therapists from The PT Clinics attended a session hosted by Roy Pottenger, MD from Northern California Orthopedic Centers (NCOC) located in Carmichael. 

Dr. Pottenger discussed various surgical interventions for cartilage injuries.  The techniques discussed which are currently available to patients, aimed both on removing damaged tissue as well as stimulating growth of new cartilage.  These surgical techniques are being performed on a wide variety of patients, including high level athletes.  Dr. Pottenger also reviewed rehabilitation guidelines, which focused on protecting the new articular surface and promoting functional activity.

Here are a few important items our team learned:

“.. non-weight bearing exercises and safe motion for the first eight weeks during the rehabilitation process are imperative to the success for patients who have surgery for a chondral defect… regardless of intervention”.

“ … a bone/cartilage “plug” can be used from one part of the knee that is not weight bearing, and can be inserted into another area of the knee that had a defect and this plug will help the defective cartilage to heal.”

Learning these techniques helps our PT’s better educate their patients about why they may be having certain post-operative symptoms. Better understanding of overall treatment guidelines following surgery allows us to provide safe and effective care to all of our patients.
